Give Classical Music a chance.

No really, you’d be surprised how often it’s used in modern mainstream media.

Video games such as The Last of Us utilized an orchestral score, No Escape is one of the more broadcast themes – it has been featured on Classic Fm and the music (as well as other elements) received an excellence award. I’ve placed an example below for everyone, I’ve never played the game but I was introduced to the soundtrack by the radio.

I feel it’s worth mentioning that the Last of Us isn’t the first time a video game has had it’s music created on an Orchestral scale. Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was such a trainwreck, but one of the elements that stood out to me at the time was that it was scored. One of the only games I knew at the time with such a detail, bear in mind this was back in 2003. Here’s the making of video.

Below is one of my favorite scores, from the soundtrack of the game, named merely as the main theme. I find it haunting to listen to, and, at the same time it’s not. Anyway, proceed!

Going back even FURTHER in time and I feel I have to mention one of the reasons for this post –  Kingdom Hearts, released in 2002 DIDN’T have an orchestral sound track. HOWEVER, it did feature one of the most awesome moments in a game I had ever experienced. A Night on Bald Mountain.

Originally part of the Fantasia sequences it opens up dramatically. Now, before anyone complains, the idiots that worked on the game managed to delete the soundtrack ahead of the HD remake that was being done at the time, yup, they goofed. But it was for the better, as they roped in Yoko Shimomura. She completely rescored 1.5 with an orchestra and built on an already wonderful soundtrack.

Flash forward to the 3D release Dream Drop Distance. 10 years in the future.

The music for Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance was a collaboration by Yoko Shimomura, Takeharu Ishimoto, and Tsuyoshi Sekito, containing musical compositions from all three. Among the songs included are tracks from The World Ends with You, originally composed by Ishimoto, who remixed them for Dream Drop Distance. [*]

Now, the significance here is quite frankly the world of Symphony of Sorcery. It is based off of Fantasia. Yoko Shimomura was behind the game’s usage of the music and quite frankly probably was the one to alter it for the game’s usage – being able to loop it n all that jazz.

I would also like people to note that a Night On Bald Mountain is also there too.

One of the most awesome parts of the first Kingdom Hearts games replicated very well in the 3DS version. What made me appreciate it better was that the quality of music was far greater. Sure, it’s on a handheld device, but C’mon, the 3DS is probably more powerful than a PS2 was back in the day (don’t quote me on that).

So far, that’s Three video game references. Yup, and I could go on and on about more of them. More recently, more TripleA games have been aiming for a sense of atmosphere and quality, and they have been able to get their games scored well. It’s wonderful to hear them on the radio being as well recieved and respected alongside what we do call classics.

A lot of, no scratch that, practically Any film that John Williams touches has at least one award winning score. You’re a fan of the Star Wars themes? Great, you’re a fan of classical music, as, Williams scored with an Orchestra. Yup, that’s all there is to it in my book. The Superman Theme is one of the most Iconic themes ever (Ranked a low 296)

John Williams’ highest entry in the Classic FM hall of fame. Is currently at 108 and it is his score from Schindler’s list

The highest of John Williams’s 5 entries in the Ultimate Hall of Fame, this first entered the chart in 2000 and peaked at number 48 in the most recent countdown. This is the third highest film score in the Ultimate Hall of Fame.

One of John Williams’ most moving scores, Schindler’s List showcases the master film composer’s staggering ability to turn a tune that captures the essence of its movie. It is yet another great example of Williams’s ability to set a film in the most perfectly sympathetic landscape, producing, yet again, music that stands up on its own when the film is taken away.

I do heartily recommend a read through the entire list from 300-1. Have fun seeing how Williams’ scores match up against each other.

Each single entry explains it’s most recent and common usage. Now, before everyone’s panties get in a bunch… There’s a separate list specifically for movie music. The final 15 will be revealed on November 7th so there’s time to get involved and try and guess which film has the number one spot. There’s already at least two entries by Hanz Zimmer and company (People seem to readily forget that Hanz Zimmer and Klaus Badelt worked on both Gladiator and Pirates of the Carribean – which explains why a certain score of Gladiator is practically Jack Sparrow’s theme.)

No seriously, here’s the two.

My Favorite Classical Tracks (Subject to change mind you!)

Adagio for Strings – Samuel Barber

Danse Macabre – Camille Saint-Saëns

Toccata and Fugue in D minor – Bach

Curse of the Black Pearl/ Pirates of the Caribbean Theme –  Klaus Badelt

Gladiator Suite – Hans Zimmer {Which leads into one of my favorite tracks from the same film. Now We Are Free.}

Whisper of Angels – Amici forever

Time to say goodbye/Con te partirò/Por Ti Volaré – Andrea Bocelli

I will leave you my friends with one of my favorite pieces of music, that… I’m honestly not sure if it IS classical.

Yup, another one from Gladiator. NOTE – The lyrics by Lisa Gerrard are … well, frankly NOT lyrics. There is no English, Italian, or Latin or any translation from any of those languages to another. Anywhere claiming to produce it are morons. It’s on the DVD commentary somewhere that Lisa just made it up on the fly to the music as a placeholder or something and Hans loved it. Soon she became the lyricist and the only person that can translate the syllables will likely never do so or be able to. Here’s a site that’s gone into more comprehensive research on the ‘issue’. Rather… a huge bitching shitstorm of a comment thread that more or less comes to a head with the response I found. Scroll down a few more times to see people pretty much corroborating what I already mentioned xD

Playlist time-!

Alright, so last time I prepared a playlist on a website for y’all… this time, I’m just going to tell you the CD’s I have in my car and it’s up to y’all if you go look for them. Bear in mind that while some will be released internationally they were purchased in the UK so titles may vary.

I am aware that there will be some overlap between compilation CD’s, however, I select them relatively carefully and try and get differently marketed sets.

I also have an old radio that takes CD’s only. Stations are usually Classic FM… and… sometimes anything else I can get, I can’t stand the dj’s talking over and between the songs most of the time. BBC Radio one just pisses me off most of the time I try and avoid it unless it’s a chart show and the people in the studio shut the fuck up and actually play music. I’d rather endure ads than listen to them prattle on for five minutes between songs because… they simply have to fill the air rather than just playing…oh I dunno, another fucking song! *cough* Sometimes the signal sucks and Radio1 is all I get between the news and other features I care fuck all about.

* Bon Jovi Greatest Hits- Mercury Records [One Disk Edition]

*Classical Voices – Sony Music [Three Disk Edition]

– Features The Prayer by Jonathan and Charlotte, Amici Forever Whisper of Angels, several renditions of Ave Maria, and a few surprises along the way.

*Eddie Stobart Trucking Songs (Sony) [Three Disk Edition]

This one’s far more an easy listening selection with ballads as well as softer rock songs… compared to below.

*[Parental Advisory] Greatest Ever Rock Anthems (Union Square Music) [Three Disk Edition]

– Beautiful People and Last Resort are at least two reasons for the Parental Advisory tag. I have a new temporary song for driving and it is Last Resort, it’s one of the heaviest things I’ll play in the car at all. [This one is the most recent bought of the rock sets and will likely be one of the last compilations as I now have three different sets that more or less cover all the bases for rock music I need]

*The Party Mix – Rock (Sony) [Three Disk Edition]

There’s not actually that much overlap between this and the Stobart set (probably deliberate), and there’s only a couple that overlap to the Rock Anthems set (Poison – Alice Cooper), this one has classics like Eye of the Tiger and other feelgood guilty pleasures.

*Keep Calm and Chill Out (Surprise Surprise it’s Sony again) [Two Disk Edition]

–Warning, when installing to computer tracks 4-17 of disk two could well fuck up. I had to rename 13 of the tracks completely. I think this is because a different version was likely released since the planning stage – one song difference is enough to throw a lot of the tracks off. Girl on fire by Alicia Keys was listed as Say Something by A Great Big World, tracks 5 and 4 respectively… And I don’t know why, just, careful folks, you might get one from the same batch I had.

I’ll admit, looking at the back cover there’s only around four songs I recognized… Listening to the whole thing and there’s plenty of earworms that were all over the radios in stores and whatnot. I love easy to listen to music, it’s a nice bridge between classical and the majority of the stuff I listen to.

*Custom CD as explained at length HERE

Sorry this one isn’t as personal, but I thought it time I mentioned that I don’t just listen to the same CD every day –  I can get away with the same one in for weeks, but I don’t always turn the radio on. My drive to work is a short one and the one to my mothers is one of the rare drives I WILL have music on. I use my ipod more frequently, when I’m walking or trying to sleep etc, and it’s on shuffle most of the time. That has more or less everything I have on it… and… frequently gets pruned down when I get sick of particular songs for sure!

So yes, add a few film scores in the mix and this is pretty much the stuff I put in my ears every so often xD

Just to give him that little more exposure I will also put up a song that Chester See wrote and sung a while ago. The live one is the one I have a copy of –

“Who Am I To Stand In Your Way”

Forgive me
I may have said things
That aren’t exactly
The way that I feel

I told you I’d be strong
I said that I moved on
But it doesn’t take long
To realize

That I’m not over you

But if there is somebody that makes you feel happy
Tends to your heart in the ways I’d been lacking
Then who am I, who am I to stand in your way
To stand in your way
To stand in your way
I won’t stand in your way

I know it sounds crazy
But I need you to trust me
If it’s how it must be
Then I’ll fade away

When it finally feels true
Then do what you have to
Cause I’d never blame you
For not choosing me

But I’m not over you

But if there is somebody that makes you feel happy
Tends to your heart in the ways I’ve been lacking
Then who am I, who am I to stand in your way
That I feel is no longer your burden
If there is someone that can make you feel perfect
Then who am I who am I to stand in your way
To stand in your way
To stand in your way
I won’t Stand in your way

Down the road someone will ask me if I know you
I’ll pause for a moment, I’ll smile and say that I used to

If there is somebody that makes you feel happy
Tends to your heart
The ways I’ve been lacking
Then who am, I who am I to stand in your way
That I feel is no longer your burden
If there is someone that make you feel perfect
Then who am I who am I to stand in your way
To stand in your way
To stand in your way
I won’t Stand in your way
I won’t Stand in your way
I won’t Stand in your way

As a Bonus, a less raw version that I didn’t know existed till today –  (but then, I’ve not really looked at his stuff since Whistle While I Work It came out… and that was a WHILE ago)

Gosh 10 years already?

10 years (and a day) since the NumaNumaDance went live, proof that stuff stays on the internet when it’s there. To quote Gary Brolsma

Just to let you all know, yes, this is the original location of the Numa Numa Dance… right here on NG. The internet sent it around like crazy, and it’s wound up on over 80 websites that I could find, with an appearance on CNN, and just now on VH1’s Best Week Ever. I’ve recieved tons of e-mail’s and hits to my website, and I just want to thank you for all the feedback and support that you’ve given me. Never in a million years would I have thought this would hit over 10 million views.

From Numa Numa Dance

And it still pisses me off to the core when people hear it and say the NumaNuma Song. It’s not called that! Just because it’s Romanian and the only lyrics most ignorant English people picked up on was ‘Nu ma’… it became known as that. (Not helped by Gman himself)

Now before I do my thing and post the lyrics with the English translation – Know that this was a pain in the arse to make sure I got it as accurate as possible. The English conflicted with the Romanian and I needed to look at at least three different lyric sources.

Here’s a video from an account claiming it to be the official one. Looks pretty legit but the song’s been around for that long –  and before the whole vevo bullshit started, so we will see.

The video alone raises some questions, but it’s well done in some ways and terrible in others. I love the random rotoscoping, and hate some of the images used. The lads are cute in their skipping around and singing at least.

I did used to have this song on my playlists, but… Y’all can see how tiresome it gets right?

Now, to learn to hate the song all over again! *plays it for quite a while*

Playlist tiime!

I usually play Eddie Stobart trucking songs, or Bon Jovi greatest hits, or Linkin Park Living Things… And occasionally Classic FM, I kept lamenting not being able to hook up my ipod to my radio then it hit me… I can… Kinda. So I put the tracks I have and like on a CD.

Then I went on Grooveshark to put them all together for you to kinda show that I like varied music and maybe you’ll find something new.

Playlist – Embed isn’t working

Please note ** There’s one song missing and it’s Fuyu no Semi/ Winter Cicada. It was a shame, but a surprise to know it’s the only one missing. Whistle while you work it and Who am I to stand in your way were surprisingly easy to find.

Chester See is a wonderful vocalist in my opinion and thanks to Toby Turner for collaborating with him.

Intererestingly –  with Wrecking ball I always heard it as

‘I came in like a Rainbow
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was Break me
Yeah, you, you Break me’

etc – Either way alternate hearing aside… It can’t be any worse than what google translate did to it –

Malinda Kathleen Reese is a heck of a lot of fun – check her out! (the Disney ones are bloody hilarious)

Actual Lyrics for Wrecking Ball – Miley Cyrus

“Wrecking Ball”

We clawed, we chained our hearts in vain
We jumped never asking why
We kissed, I fell under your spell.
A love no one could denyDon’t you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you
I can’t live a lie, running for my life
I will always want youI came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was wreck me
Yeah, you, you wreck me

I put you high up in the sky
And now, you’re not coming down
It slowly turned, you let me burn
And now, we’re ashes on the ground

Don’t you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you
I can’t live a lie, running for my life
I will always want you

I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was wreck me

I came in like a wrecking ball
Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung
Left me crashing in a blazing fall
All you ever did was wreck me
Yeah, you, you wreck me

I never meant to start a war
I just wanted you to let me in
And instead of using force
I guess I should’ve let you win
I never meant to start a war
I just wanted you to let me in
I guess I should’ve let you win

Don’t you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you

I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was wreck me

I came in like a wrecking ball
Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung
Left me crashing in a blazing fall
All you ever did was wreck me
Yeah, you, you wreck me
Yeah, you, you wreck me

Innocent Bird

Ok… I will have to say this expressly here since no-one seemed to be paying attention when I first posted this online.
I CANNOT READ HINDI, SPEAK MUCH OF IT, OR TRANSLATE IT!
I found the transliterations through google myself and collected them here for my own benefit and edited a few things here and there to make a little more sense and for clarity. I only know a few words… only because of repetition!

I searched on google, pressed Ctrl+C with the selected text then Ctrl+V into blogger, that was it. No real effort beyond making things clearer and editing. And I provided LINKS TO THE ORIGINAL PAGES.

I had the fortune of being able to listen to this song at the end of a recent Bollywood film Rockstar.

I thought this would be worth a share… since many people will discount this song almost immediately I will put the original Hindi transliteration and the English translation.

I know very little about the film so this post won’t be as informative as my Fuyu no Semi post (for what it was).

Nadaan Parindey ghar aaja  / Nadaan Parinde / O Innocent Bird / O childish bird

The subtitles in the film often translated ‘Oh Nadaan parindey’ as ‘O innocent bird’, that’s the translation I will be sticking to. It’s a haunting song that has stuck with me enough to track it down and since I started this post originally I have managed to find out more information about the music and contributers.

Speaking of contributors there are so many different recordings of the lyrics its annoying to try and figure out some of the lines and where some parts of the songs are compared to those being sung. Feel free to correct any assumptions I do make when I have knowingly altered wordings.

* This paragraph has some repeated lines, and some that I don’t really know the translation to. For the English I will repeat the lines and put ~ around those that are.

Lyrics recorded Here and the English was corrected by myself.

O innocent bird

come home.come home.come home

come home.come home.come home

why do you wander from place to place

why is your condition so bad so tired, lost

why do you wander from place to place

you have become a nomad of nights

O innocent bird

come home.come home.come home.come home

O innocent bird

come home.come home.come home.come home

A hundred pains are distributed all over your body

your body is all maligned with ill-deeds.

how much you cut the winds with your wings ,

You cant run away from yourself.

break the skies , fire up the things which irritate you …

you can’t hide yourself .

take whichever path in life, you are homeless there

you will come back to your own home,

ohh innocent….O innocent bird

come home.come home.come home.come home

O innocent bird

come home.come home.come home. come home

O crow, I have only one request to you, eat my whole flesh,

~O crow, I have only one request to you, eat my whole flesh ~

but do not eat my eyes, don’t eat my eyes as I have a wish to see my lover..

~I have a wish to see my lover, pray don’t eat my eyes~

ohh innocent O innocent bird

come home.come home.come home.come home.

O innocent bird

come home.come home.come home. come home.

[[Trail off with- O innocent bird come home-]]

Since working on editing these lyrics I have found a much smoother English translation of the lyrics with respect for the site I will only copy the English and it will link back to the original and resource filled page. It translates many Bollywood songs and takes the version directly from the film.

I’ve taken the liberty of editing the English a little and tweaking a few things here and there. Don’t for one moment think I know any Hindi other than ‘come home’ (Ghar aajaa) by heart.

O Naadaan Parindey Ghar aa ja: Lyrics, Translation (Rockstar)

O naadaan parindey

ghar aa jaa..

ghar aa jaa..

O innocent bird,

come back home..

come back home..

kyun des bides phire maara

kyun haal behaal thaka haara

kyun des bides phire maara

tu raat biraat ka banjara

why do you wander country-country (in such bad shape)

why is your condition so bad, all tired-lost

why do you wander this country to that

you (have become) a nomad of nights..

sau dard badan pe phaile hain

har karam ke kapde maile hain

a hundred pains are spread on the body,

clothes of all compassion are dirty..

[[all the sources of compassion are not there for you right now]]

kaate chahe jitna paron se hawa ko

khud se na bach payega tu

tod aasmanon ko phoonk de jahanon ko

khud ko chhhupa na payega tu

koi bhi le rasta

tu hai tu bebasta

apne hi ghar aayega tu

however much you cut the winds with your wings,

you’ll not be able to fend yourself from yourself..

break the skies and burn the worlds,

but you can’t hide yourself,

whatever path you take,

you are homeless (out there)

you will come to your home only..

o naadaaan…

o naadan parindey, ghar aa jaaa..

ghar aa ja. ghar aa ja. ghar aa ja.

Oh Innocent…

oh innocent bird, come home

come home. come home. come home

kaaga re kaaga re mori itni araj tujhse chun chun khaiyo maans

khaiyo na tu naina more, khaiyo na tu naina mohe piya ke milan ki aas..

O crow, I have so much of request to you, eat (my bodys) flesh,

but do not eat my eyes, don’t eat my eyes as I have a wish to see my lover..

**The crow part of the song is more relevant when you see the film, there’s a CG crow involved from what I remember, also the crow is a carrion bird, a scavenger that in some mythologies happens to be caring. An Indian crow typically has more brown feathers on its body than it does black – when we say crow we often end up meaning the common American Crow. Same family as Ravens and such.

Also “The film ends as it started: with Jordan performing “Nadaan Parindey”, and he envisions Heer’s spirit having flown to him”

One commenter has said “Nice word by word translation! I am just trying to elaborate the song as per my understanding – Nadan Parinda is ‘soul’, Ghar is ‘God’s place – heaven’ and desh-videsh is ‘Human Body’! So the song signifies that the soul is to free the body someday and go back to its original house(the heaven)! Not so sure though!”

I don’t much care or know… but Nadan Parinda Ghar would then mean something like Soul return to heaven… I don’t agree so much with the commenter in a way since Ghar seems to mean either come or home (I wouldn’t like to second guess the word order) but… The song itself… The singer is praying his lovers soul would return to him or be well (which explains the end of the movie SO MUCH) Just. There’s a lot of blathering on I could do about this song… but it means much more to me now than it first did.

Mulan, a name that has become one most households happen to know.

Disney released their animated version of their interpretation of the ballad of Mulan back in 1998, much later in 2009 a live action version was created by Starlight International Media Group (DVD release CineAsia) [Due later this year is an English adaptation of the tale, supposed to be an equivalent to the Starlight release in 2009- don’t hold me to it too much I’m not entirely sure what’s going to happen yet]. It struck me that there were many slight similarities between the tales and of course there were many differences.

Now for starters the title is different for the live action release- sounds like an obvious thing to say but remakes often use the same titles to over-write the past mistakes of previous movies. Disney cannot OWN the name Mulan for anything since it is a name of CHINESE FOLKLORE.

Anyhoo this is a Mulan vs Mulan: Legendary Warrior/ Warrior Princess comparison of sorts.

Some of the scenes are similar, in that some of the parts of the movies follow the same legend enough to be considered samey… Forgive me, I am tired and this is late – I will come back and edit this at some point in the future, just don’t hold me to it immediately. And of course where there are cultural divides there will be differences. Another immidiate difference that must be noted is that Disney Mulan is rated unfairly U (Universal) in the UK where with its themes it should really be rated a PG (Parental Guidence) since you essentially see death. You know it has happened and it is in a context of war, seeing a battle torn landscape etc… However Starlight Mulan is a 15 (noone under 15 should watch this legally in a cinematic release) and rightly so.

China is shown far more realistic in SM – though this could have something to do with being presented in an era of wartorn China. The nation of Wei being the strongest and post ‘romance of the three kingdoms’. Now I feel somewhat daft bringing up realism in comparison with a Disney Movie in some ways, but they present this idealised China that is all pretty and worry free… Till the Huns decided to climb the Great Wall of China which .. is an impossible feat for the time (It’s even quite tricky nowadays if you’re not careful). Disney went for iconic as they were going for an era, it all screams China to a child so… therefore it is all well and good…

Fa Mulan is a farm girl that has little in the means of worry, other than her parents trying to get her married off if she can pass with the matchmaker… and Hua Mulan is a strong woman from a ‘military family’ that is a much stronger female, she is a skilled martial artist (from being raised around them) and just before the war breaks out she is told to stop by her father. There are hints and somewhat of an allusion to the DM since there is mention of her being married off and she has to act like a woman. But… then… she still weaves on her loom and does girl things so… she wouldn’t have met as many obstacles if she was to have to get married.

Please do note as well that for DM I will use the Simplified Fa for the family name, and for the SM I will use the more Mandarin Hua to tell the difference. Also, I will just use her family name on occasion, it is more a Japanese convention to do this, but I am becoming lazy here.

Now, in both tales the father is unable to battle, and the daughter is worried about her father enough to take his place. In DM this is done beautifully with a montage after its an old war wound keeping her father home. In SM there is less deliberation, she knows her father is ill and the war isn’t going to do him any favours. She even remarks as much to her horse, which is where she meets the ‘charming’ Wentai -more about him later-.

There isn’t anything remarkable that happens from here on, she gets a few pointers in SM off a family friend who figures her out. In DM she gets Mushu, which in the interest in making this a family movie was included.

They both end up bathing in some water because they need to, however in DM is it more of an excuse for comedy and a near miss with being identified. In SM it becomes known that a woman is in the camp (which earns the death penalty –  a lot of things do trust me-) But… really that could have been avoided if Hua was less uptight, but… it was a point in the plot that served somewhat of a purpose.

In both versions of the movies they are sentenced to execution. In DM it is caused because she is discovered after being wounded, having noone to confide in about the truth it was bound to happen sooner than later. In the SM version it is because someone steals something from another. All of the men have to strip down, so to avoid the humiliation she owns up to it. Either way it means death, at least she would be able to keep her dignity to the following day…

But no, there’s a raid and she escapes death with the help of the love interest. Which happens in a sense in both versions.

Both versions also have the deaths of the head generals, but in SM it is far more war torn and this ordinary (ish) woman must become a heartless killer. She does have trouble with this several times, but that only makes her human. Which in a general is an unfortunate thing in such war torn days.

Now, something that happens in both the DM and SM is the ‘Death’ of the love interest. In DM this happens in the sequel, but still Fa has to deal with it as well as Hua. Hua looses herself in alcohol and begins to care less and less about fighting. She had became a general and had lost the heart of battle that she was supposed to have. In DM Shang lives in what is a very much LoTR way. Sorry but the horse thing with the river is totally ripped from Aragorn being saved by his horse.

Though with both deaths of the love interests it is relieved that no, they weren’t dead. And in SM the sly bastard only pretended to be dead to get her back to being the ruthless killing machine she needed to be. It was because of her love for him that she split her forces to save his hide.. and the supply train got mulched, yah way to go xD In DM he simply survives.

Now, the enemy leader in DM is the ruthless Shan yu… I was going to say sorta, but no, he orders the killing of messenger scouts to encourage the survivor to run quicker etc (see why it should be PG now?). In SM it is the son of the leader of the nomadic “Ruran”s that is the cruel blood thirsty one. Their struggle is born from necessity, instead of settling down they pillage and plunder.. which… if the son wasn’t an ass would have been sorted. Hell the son kills the father to gain power.

The father can be seen as fair and somewhat kind by the deliberate dialogue between the leader and  mind warp cameo Vitas (seriously, he’s in it for whatever reasons) that says he had his freedom years ago, yet the only non Oriental/Asian/Chinese member of the cast chooses to stay.

SERIOUSLY – He gave me the creeps, too much like a friend of mine with his long hair look O.o

Although THIS may be the reason

In SM there is another major battle to get rid of the leader of the enemy, however, the ever so smart woman general has a plan to be followed and low and behold the asshole main general person betrays them all. Leaving Hua’s forces in despirate need of aid etcetc. Wentai is actually the seventh son of the emperor etc, trades himself for their saftety *rolls hand* this part I’m not so sure about it being in the original legend since no one account of it actually exists as the penultimate one.

She ends up going under cover and doing all these cool things… but sod it in the end its still the same, she ends up hero of China. She does meet the Emperor and says she would like to go home after 12 years (yes that long)… though after all that, nope Hua doesn’t get the man, he ends up getting married off to the princess of the Rurans for peace. Fa does get the man, only in the sequel, but it is hinted at strongly in the first one anyway.

And so, both versions end up going home to their daddies and everything being hunky dory… both love interests also show up for brief times…

Though in the legend she is supposed to go home then months later, the men think they are finding their brother at arms, only to be shocked to find a she… It would have been more amusing that way, but definitely not as dramatic. I suppose that’s how the woman got away with it and got into Chinese history, by not making a big deal of it and not being discovered.

The music in SM is hauntingly familiar in places, the score must be similar to another movie that I can almost remember from audio alone.

In DM the music serves as montage, mood, and entertainment.

In SM the music is for montaging briefly (scenes are often chopped up by a blinding whiteout- not advisable to watch this one in the dark because of it), setting a mood in often a very chilling way, and… to denote sadness.

The only real song in the movie is as follows – copied from the subtitles of the Cine-asia 2010 release

A century of human life is like a dream

Life and death occur, heroes have no regrets.

Protect my homeland, show off my nation’s pride

What is there in life what regrets in death

There are enemy winds up north, but home fires down south

I miss my wife and children, and my home

They are across the mountains, far away.

This is sung almost twice over during the execution of men, showing the solidarity they had for one another. It is stirring the way they sing it… but… it is ultimately what the movie is all about.

The story of Mulan is not a nice one, its one bred from battle and deception… I can only say that I am glad the Chinese stepped up and made a more historic and ‘accurate’ version of the tale.

She is claimed to have genuinely existed… just no-one can pin down exactly when – I say that but for pitys sake just google the hell out of the legend of Mulan and you’ll get some insight to it.

So ends a comparison of sorts that has taken over an hour to type up. And that is with glossing over quite a strong part of the story.

Oh- and as a post script edit… I actually like both versions of the story. Not a hater, just a fan with some observations I felt like sharing. Somehow I don’t think I’ll be liking the English live action adaptation when that comes out though.
