Winter Cicada – Fuyu no Semi – Lyrics

Fuyu no Semi/Winter Cicada is a spin off from the series ‘haru wo daiteita/Embracing love’ where the leads Katou and Iwaki play the roles of Kusaka Touma and Akizuki Keiichirou, respectively.

Depending on the translation of the manga, the actors are either simply acting out roles… or the protagonists of Winter Cicada are indeed parallel ancestors to the protagonists of Embracing love… Considering either man would have had to have contact with women to keep up appearances it’s not that far fetched to think that they could be related… or, on a deeper note… Reincarnations.

Their determination to be together and their underlying uncertainty becomes something else when one considers all three of the possibilities to the Winter Cicada chapters.

As for the OVA – it is a tragic tale of war-torn lovers that ends bitter-sweet and with a lovely musical number. Since I managed to watch all three OVA’s I have loved the song. Now I’ve finally got off my ass and done something about learning it (or at least its meaning). I’ve popped this post up here to hopefully keep reminding me that there is far more to this song!

Even years after it’s original posting this still gets the odd page view, I really should do more like it! It has to be one of the most successful pages on this entire blog (and the one I had originally posted it on – before deleting the site-)

There’s contrasting ideas about translation of the lyrics of the song all over the internet… and to make matters worse there’s also the shorter ending title version compared with the full song-!

I by far prefer the Aarinfantasy translation- maybe that’s because it was the version I heard first with karaoke style lyrics.

Also – Sorry but it’s romaji-! I never learned enough Japanese to even get to grips with both hiragana and katakana.

As translated by Aarinfantasy
Sometimes, men and women are born
out of season, like the winter cicadas
yet if those cicadas, without lamenting their brief time
devoted themselves to singing, no one would say that they lied
Though one may call it a dream that wanders withered fields
one day, after the long passage of time, it will come true
Ah, life is life, and dreams are dreams

Ask the wind where they will bloom

At times, there will be people who
will break one’s familiar season.
Just like a cicada in winter,
they’ll be born in the midst of hardship.
However, during that short period,
if they are without a sorrow,
they’re able to devote themselves to cry,
and there’s none who will call it a lie.

At least, I will run about the desolate field;
Though, if I call it a dream,
even then, one day, passing over the flow of time;
The truthful day is still going to come.

Ah, a living life is living; – a dream is a dream.
I wonder where it will bloom… – questions for the wind.

At times, there will be flowers that
will break one’s familiar season.
Just like in the early days in the spring,
they’ll be in a beautiful full bloom.
However, being called as the lost bloom,
if they are without any doubts,
they’re able to devote themselves to bloom,
and there’s none who will call it a lie.

At least, I can surround myself with the blue sky;
Become the color of the wind.
And so, then, one day, passing over the flow of time,
the day to bear the fruit will arrive.

Ah, a spirit is a spirit; – flowers are flowers.
Wonder where it will scatter… – questions for the wind.

At least, I will run about the desolate field;
Though, if I call it a dream,
even then, one day, passing over the flow of time;
The truthful day is still going to come.

Ah, a living life is living; – a dream is a dream.
I wonder where it will bloom… – questions for the wind.

I didn’t consider Embracing love itself to be all that spectacular when I first encountered it… and yet, I just HAD to keep watching, and then reading. It is written to be a Drama. It is not fluff, and it is not pure angst. It is a journey. It has also been picked up by SuBLime and is being republished for an English speaking audience. If you are willing to stick by Youka Nitta you will also be able to see a clear art evolution from the author that is subtle, and quite wonderful.

Winter Cicada is of a similar nature. Parts of it make me want to vomit rainbows, others do make me cry and want to watch the next part as soon as possible. Personally I like both installments, with the manga it is lovely to see in Embracing Love the shooting of the film, it means more to watch Winter Cicada after you have managed to read the books somehow.

I find it such a shame that the characters felt that they had to commit suicide. One because his honor demanded it, the other in the thought that they could be together again and that his life was incomplete without him.  In a sense I can draw a parallel with how I feel about some of the people I adore and would want to spend my life with. Or with several periods of my life. Part of me has wanted to go into a coma for a while just to slip away unnoticed and begin again at a different point. Such a romantic Idea… but just so impossible. We must learn to take life as it comes, though, for some… it is so much harder and people often believe that the act of committing suicide together to be reborn together is the way to go. I just… Whatever xD

Anyway, props to Youka Nitta! Much thanks to SuBLime for publishing their works too! I hadn’t considered myself a fan before a larger print library was accessible.
